Lessons From Iraq
Our military is the most powerful and well equipped military in the world. We spend over half our Federal budget on the military. Hell, the B-2 Stealth Bomber costs $2 Billion to build and we have 21 of them.
Needless to say all this firepower and technology leaves many in our country feeling helpless and vulnerable against our government. Having such a strong military allows power mad leaders such as Mr. Bush to lord over us with fear. Most people think there is just no way we could ever overthrow our government.
I have heard it used as an argument by lefty talkers such as Randi Rhodes. Many on the pro-gun side will say they need their guns to fight off the government if it ever comes to that. Randi Rhodes will fire back that there is no way anyone in this country can fight off our government with their shot guns and 9 mm handguns.
Apparently Americans have not yet fully grasped the lessons from Iraq. We were given the same lesson from Vietnam. The Iraqis are holding the worlds largest and most sophisticated military at bay. Our military is basically paralyzed. There is nothing they can do but watch the Iraqis kill each other and do their best not to get killed themselves. The Iraqis have successfully marginalized the most powerful military in the world.
It’s basic math. There are over 300 million Americans. Our military, if fully mobilized may be about 2 million strong. Even if all we have is forks and butter knives we are going to win that fight.
Think about it: If the U.S. won’t carpet bomb Baghdad, do you think they will honestly carpet bomb Omaha, Nebraska, New York City, or Los Angeles? I don’t think so.
More importantly, do you think American Soldiers would fire upon American Citizens? I don’t think so either.
We do have to worry about the private military corporations such as BlackWater USA but so far they are only 200,000 strong. We could beat them with toothpicks.
The point is we should not fear our government. We should not fear Mr. Bush. Obviously the best revolution is a peaceful one that works within the framework of the government. We saw this in November of 2006 when The People stood up and voted.
We voted for change. We voted to get out of Iraq because we see what a horrible mistake it was. We voted to get out of Iraq because we realized that Mr. Bush is an incompetent leader too stubborn to change strategy, tactics, and admit mistakes. We voted to get out of Iraq because we finally realized the only reason why Bush wants to stay in Iraq is to protect the oil interests for Chevron, BP, Exxon, and Shell. We voted to get out of Iraq because we realized that Bush wants Iraq for a military staging ground for future attacks against Iran and Syria.
Well, Congress has a bill that would bring our troops home by 2008 and Bush is threatening to veto that bill.
If there was ever a time for action it is now. People need to be prepared to protest in order to force Bush to sign this bill.
There is NO reason to stay in Iraq. There is no reason for one more U.S. Soldier to die. Bring them home NOW!

There is, in my opinion, a very real danger of some kind of schism in the military if the Commander in Cowardice gives the order to attack Iran.
The retired Generals doing all the carping are absolutely speaking for officers still serving. And the message is "we've had it."

Amen. (and I'm still keeping my guns)

Yes, those Iraqi insurgents are holding the world's most powerful army at bay. Just like the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong were doing 40 years ago.
And there's an earlier example. In the late 1700s, the world's most powerful country tried to squish a rebellion in one of their colonies. And those ragtag insurgent terrorists kicked their asses and founded their own country.

As incompetent is Bush is, I DO fear him and what he might do. It's that ride 'em cowboy gunslinger attitude that makes the world afraid of the U.S. And, where there is fear, there is danger.

Well, the military is made up of men and women who have minds of their own. They can stop this any time they want by refusing to kill any more. This is why I agree with you. I doubt very many would bomb or shoot their family and friends. We can overthrow this government any time we want to. It's just that not enough people have reached that point - yet.

Vietnam went on for years after Americans started protesting it. Iraq is another situation not because of what the U.S. has done so much, as that the whole geographic area has been run over roughshod by Western powers for years. Enough protracted abuse will lead to mass insanity and flailing away at the only targets in reach : igniting a regional storm of attacks on governments. Those are the projections of the war game study Don Rumsfeld hid. Rather than be taken as some over-the-top amateur analyst, I have posted informational links on my Blogroll under 'Intel' : 'Desert Crosssing' is the professional projection. Note its general accuracy projecting events. Question : Is it in fact a self-fulfilling prophecy ? ( i.e. The answer to the question "What is the Bush White House's real agenda ?" )

unfortunately, things aren't as simple as a couple of people above are suggesting.
after reading the comments about the possibility of the troops standing up and saying, 'enough' or the population at large rebelling against the gov't, I went to my previous blog and dusted off a couple of old posts and placed em in my current one:
http://preserve-protect.blogspot.com/
the fact is, we're programmed from birth to obey authority and, as these posts show, overcoming those impulses is extremely difficult.
I had brought up [at least hinted] at the same idea in another post I had planned for today--but have now put off because the 2 I just posted are extremely long. I'll put it up tomorrow.
still, much as I hope for regime change, I don't think it will come through force of arms--either by our soldiers standing up to their commanders OR the populace standing up to the armed forces of our country.
as the 2 articles I just posted show, we're just not programmed that way. we're going to have to approach the problem in another manner -- I just hope we're up to the challenge.
it's time to start thinking outside the box, folks. if Congress won't stand up--what can we, must we, will we do?

There will probly be a draft before all of this is over with in Iraq.

oh, Larry-- I HOPE you're wrong on that count -- though you're likely right.
I lived through that once already--
kids forced to go into exile or take part in an unjust war; all the drum-beating, escalating, threats coming from the gov't, and the rhetoric similar to what we hear today about 'giving aid to the enemy' by espousing peace.
under every bed was a communist--just as, today, under every bed is a terrorist.
please, let's not go there again.
but, when I think of those days, the parallels are already stark.

Great post. Unfortunately, I don't think the general public is going to get off their lazy asses to properly protest this war -- until there is a draft.
The Bush admin knows this all too well.

Did any of you notice how quick the media was to pull the trigger on China with regards to the V Ech incident? They had the shooter as a Chinese National here on a student visa who entered the country through San Francisco and was NOT a student of V Tech. How many more "Remember the Maine" scenarios are built into our news media? Foreign wars prevent war at home so hopes of revolution will be dashed by the assembling of outside mystical enemies created by Dick-tater Bush.

Hi VVWKB,
I did notice that...it made no sens except that the hate mongers on the right are always in need of creating new enemies. They have had their sites set on China for some time, but the problem is corporations are making too much money on China so they don't fully unleash the attack dogs.
Hi Tom, indeed our country is founded upon an insurgency that railed against rampant corrupt capitalism and oligarchy. That subject is worthy of its own post, something Americans seem to forget, that at one time our found fathers were considered traitors and if caught would have been hung on site. That there were those who remained loyal to King George to the bitter end. That by geurilla war tactics and terrorism we were able to defeat the mightiest military in the world.
Hi Two Crows, I still think we are very far from any forceful confrontation with our government.
But it appears we are heading to the poing where literally millions of Americans are going to have to show up at the gates of Congress and on the White House lawn before our leaders start to take us seriously.
The best way also is to keep voting the bums out until they start to get it.
Lizzy, I fear you may be right. Most people I come across in my daily life are still oblivious to exactly what's going on in our country.

hey, Poli--
'Most people I come across in my daily life are still oblivious to exactly what's going on in our country.'
how can that possibly be true?
'Beam me up, Scotty. There's no intelligent life on this planet.'
