Get A Visit From Bush; Get Killed
Anbar Province has been elevated to super star status by the Bush Administraion and the media as an example of how great everything is going in Iraq. Last week Bush met with Sheik Abdul Sattar Abu Risha, the man the Administration is giving credit for brining peace and progress to Anbar though some thought of Sheik Risha as a thug and "unsavory" character:
During his “surprise visit” to Iraq earlier this month, President Bush met with Sattar Abu Risha, the head of the Anbar Salvation Council who “has a rather unsavory reputation as one of the shadiest figures in the Sunni community.” Time magazine wrote that “Sheikh Sattar, whose tribe is notorious for highway banditry, is also building a personal militia, loyal not to the Iraqi government but only to him.” Marc Lynch writes, “It’s kind of humiliating to watch an American President get rolled by a two bit, corrupt petty shaykh.”
Well, today it is being reported that Sheik Risha has been killed by car bomb.
Note to Iraqi Leaders: Rethink that meeting with Bush next time and rethink being heralded as an example of "success" by the U.S. You might as well paint a bullseye on your back.
Abu Risha Killed in Bomb Attack in Iraq
Iraqi tribal leader Abdul Sattar Abu Risha, a key figure in U.S. efforts to turn local residents against al-Qaeda in the restive Anbar province, was killed today by a roadside bomb, U.S. military and Iraqi sources confirmed.Abu Risha was a leading member of the Anbar Salvation Council, a group formed a year ago Thursday that proved critical to a recent reduction in insurgent violence in the province. He worked closely with U.S. officials, a fact that made him a target of militants angry about his decision to cooperate with the United States and his ability to convince other tribal sheiks to follow.
He and two bodyguards were killed near his home in Ramadi, a town that as recently as February was under the effective control of al-Qaeda in Iraq fighters. The explosion at roughly 3:20 p.m. local time destroyed the vehicle they were riding in.
