Using Disaster To Push The Right Wing Agenda

In case you missed it, Fox News sez Al Qaedas is causing teh fires. A caller into the Thom Hartmann show pointed out that if that is the case then clearly the "fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here" strategy has failed. Which means we should bring all our troops home now to help fight the Fire Qaedas in Southern California.

Glenn Beck is at it again:

Last night, CNN Headline News host Glenn Beck blamed California’s massive wildfires on the “damn environmentalists” and their “bad environmental policies.” He also claimed that global warming has nothing to do with the situation, stating, “[I]f I hear global warming one more time, blood is going to shoot out of my eyes.”

To prove his points, he brought on R.J. Smith of the Exxon-funded Competitive Enterprise Institute and Chris Horner, author of the Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming and Environmentalism. Horner — who is also a senior fellow at CEI — predictably argued that “[g]lobal warming is not a likely suspect” for the fires and Smith said that “the greens have made things worse by stopping all [fuels] management.”

In 2002, Bush proposed HFI, which advocated “thinning” forests to decrease the risk of wildfires. But more than anything else, it was an attempt to curry favor with the timber and logging industries, which donated more than $1 million to Bush’s 2000 campaign. HFI allowed loggers to cut down large, valuable trees miles from at-risk communities, allegedly in order to finance the removal of the smaller brush that fuels wildfires.

Environmentalists don’t oppose removing brush and chapparal in at-risk areas, but logging in backforests has nothing to do with wildfire prevention.

So now it's the fault of the "environmentalists" who refuse to allow the clearing of brush? That's almost as stoopid as the "gots to fight'em over there" argument. Pretty sad when Bush, Beck, and other right wing tools will take a disaster like the fires in CA and use it to further their own political agenda. It's also a way of subliminally placing the blame on California for the fires as if this logic would allow the Federal Government to wash their hands clean and be done with all us America Haters.

"Yeah, it's a disaster but, if you just woulda let Bush enforce his Healthy Forests Initiative you wouldn't be on fire right now...and if you didn't hate America so much maybe the fire wouldn't have been started in the first place."

How do we know that the fires aren't the work of some disgrunlted right wingers fed up with all us "America Haters" and damn fringy leftists libruls?

I keep waiting for Pat Robertson to say that Southern California is experiencing God's Wraith for the Godless Homo behaviour of Hollywood.

Are the fires really Dumbledore's fault?

CNN - Flames fickle in their ferocity

Southern California's wildfires have touched down in some places like tornados -- destroying some homes while leaving others standing.

In a neighborhood littered with charred, smoldering debris, the Rancho Bernardo home of Pepe and Carolina Galmes was relatively unscathed. That left them stunned, especially because the forest behind the home was destroyed.

The house in northern San Diego County dodged the roaring Witch wildfire, the area's largest, that by Wednesday had burned 196,420 acres.

"We believed the whole day of Monday that the house was gone because when we left, the smoke alarms were going on and also there was raining fire," Carolina Galmes said.

"Our children had sparks all over their hair ... when they were going into the car, so we believed the house was going to be burned completely.

"(When) we saw it from the highway, we don't believe our eyes," she said. "We were calling our family and telling them the house was still there."
