Fueling The Fire

Who is the brainiac that decided to continue negotiating with Poland to put a missile defense shield there when Russia which has already invaded Georgia has voiced strong opposition to it? Talk about fueling the fire. It almost seems as if the United States wants war with Russia. I guess we loved the Cold War so much that we want to start another one.

The whole situation in Georgia is bizarre. Don’t get me wrong, Russia is no saint. But in this case it seems the United States provoked the entire conflict. The U.S. trained and equipped Georgian troops. When Georgia asked if we would support their invasion of South Ossetia the U.S. said yes.

And why is it no one ever talks about what started the Russian invasion of Georgia? It was Georgia that invaded South Ossetia provoking a Russian response. Russia is not innocent in all of this but neither is the U.S. or Georgia. The media however acts like Russia invaded Georgia unprovoked.

All the headlines are slanted as well to favor Georgia and the U.S. The big one yesterday that was splashed all over various news agencies was “Russia: 'Forget' Georgian territorial integrity”. On first blush the headline makes it sound like Russia is going to annex Georgia again. But if one bothers to read the article one sees it is with respect to South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Both of these territories have been “breakaway” provinces or “autonomous Republics” ever since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Georgia has little or no say over these regions. If they want to become part of Russia then so be it. Why should we use our troops and money to stop Russia from annexing two areas that want to be part of Russia? What effect does it really have on Georgia? To me it seems like just an excuse to broaden the war and bring U.S. troops into the region.

Just a quick note: Think Halliburton and KBR will get contracts to rebuild Georgia? Will BlackWater USA provide the security?

US, Poland Reach Agreement On Anti-Missile Defense Deal

WARSAW, Poland — Poland and the United States struck a deal Thursday that will strengthen military ties and put an American missile interceptor base in Poland, a plan that has infuriated Moscow and sparked fears in Europe of a new arms race. Contnues Here

Russia: Poland risks attack because of US missiles

By JIM HEINTZ, Associated Press Writer '

MOSCOW - A top Russian general said Friday that Poland's agreement to accept a U.S. missile interceptor base exposes the ex-communist nation to attack, possibly by nuclear weapons, the Interfax news agency reported.

The statement by Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn is the strongest threat that Russia has issued against the plans to put missile defense elements in former Soviet satellite nations.

Poland and the United States on Thursday signed a deal for Poland to accept a missile interceptor base as part of a system the United States says is aimed at blocking attacks by rogue nations. Moscow, however, feels it is aimed at Russia's missile force.

"Poland, by deploying (the system) is exposing itself to a strike — 100 percent," Nogovitsyn, the deputy chief of staff, was quoted as saying.

He added, in clear reference to the agreement, that Russia's military doctrine sanctions the use of nuclear weapons "against the allies of countries having nuclear weapons if they in some way help them." Nogovitsyn that would include elements of strategic deterrence systems, he said, according to Interfax.

At a news conference earlier Friday, Nogovitsyn had reiterated Russia's frequently stated warning that placing missile-defense elements in Poland and the Czech Republic would bring an unspecified military response. But his subsequent reported statement substantially stepped up a war of words.

Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski was quoted Friday by the Polish news agency PAP as saying that Poland is open to Russian inspections because it wants to give Moscow "tangible proof" that the planned base is not directed against Russia.

U.S. officials have said the timing of the deal was not meant to antagonize Russian leaders at a time when relations already are strained over the recent fighting between Russia and Georgia over the separatist Georgian region of South Ossetia. Continues Here [emph. added]

We either have idiots running this country or they know exactly what they are doing and want more conflict with Russia.

It's been interesting to watch how quickly the NeoCons and Republicans can start hating Russians again. What happened to the global war on terror? What about brown skinned Muslims? We going to forget about all them now that we have the Red Commie Ruskies to hate again? Didn't we get enough of the 40 year Cold War? Do we really need another?

Don't look now but Bush and Mukasey are EXPANDING Domestic Spying. We are inches away people from becoming a Fascist Dictatorship. FISA was just the begining.

Mukasey Says He’ll Give FBI More Authority to Gather Intelligence

U.S. May Ease Police Spy Rules

The Justice Department has proposed a new domestic spying measure that would make it easier for state and local police to collect intelligence about Americans, share the sensitive data with federal agencies and retain it for at least 10 years.

Any war and every war is a good war for the neocon fascists. Their business and pleasure is instigating and profitting from war.

And the corproate American media is doing it again. Pure pro-Georgian propaganda is all we will see from them.

Americans didn't get behind the Vietnam War and make the kind of sacrifices they did during WWII.

Americans aren't getting behind the Iraq War and making the kind of sacrifices they made during WWII either.

Is the administration thinking, since it looks like they might be thwarted in their attempt to start a war with Iran, now be turning to something greater, like war with Russia? Why bother with a proxy war with Iran... why not just go for the gusto?

If the administration started a genuine World War III, it would be something we would all have to get behind by necessity, and it would be something for which we would have to (out of necessity) make the kinds of sacrifices our parents and grandparents made during WWII.
